Mechanism of Action:
Albendazole is a benzimidazole anthelmintic active against most nematodes and some cestodes. The drug exerts its anthelmintic activity by interfering with
the normal metabolic functioning of the parasite. Albendazole selectively blocks the glucose uptake by adult helminthes in the intestine and their tissue dwelling larvae. Inhibition of glucose uptake leads to endogenous depletion of glycogen stored within the parasite. This in turn causes the decrease in the formation of adenosine triphosphate, which is essential to the survival and reproduction of the helminth. By this mechanism, the drug slowly depletes the energy levels of the susceptible parasites, which are initially immobilized and then killed
